My loops keep pulling out
The most common problem, always. In order of likelihood:
- Fabric isn't drum-tight. Flick-test it. If it doesn't sound like a drum, re-tension.
- You're lifting the needle too high between stitches. The tip should graze the fabric, not lift into the air. If you lift too far, the yarn drags out the previous loop.
- Open channel is facing the wrong direction. The slot on the needle must face forward — in the direction you're moving. Rotate the tool.
- Yarn is under tension. Pull out a loose puddle of yarn on the far side of your work. The yarn should feed from that puddle, not directly from a taut ball.
- Not punching to the handle. Push the needle all the way down until the handle touches the fabric — every single stitch.
- Yarn is too thin for the needle. Loops need friction with the surrounding fabric weave. Thin yarn slips out. Match yarn weight to needle size (see Tools).
- Fabric weave is too open. Burlap is the worst offender. Switch to 12-hpi monks cloth.
